Why do Indian Students Need Career Guidance?

Making decisions is hard, especially when these decisions might make or break your life. One such important life decision is that of choosing a career.

It has been found that the way young students think about career and jobs is highly influenced by parents, their social background and their sense of identity. Many students also tend to make career decisions based on the most common career choice among their peers. They don’t realize what they actually like until it is too late .

The process of choosing a career begins at an early age, right after a student finishes his/ her schooling. At this age, students are too young to understand the importance of career and how it might influence their life. And that is precisely why they need to be guided in the right direction.

To know what is the right career for them, the students must first have an understanding of what course to choose and whether what they are capable of actually matches their interests.

This is why career counselling plays a huge role in a student’s life.

Why do Indian students need career guidance?

The Indian student population is in millions. It is also true a majority of these students do not know any career options beyond the most conventional ones like medicine, engineering, law, architecture etc.

Thus, they only think of a career for themselves depending upon the options that they already know. A student might want to get into computer engineering thinking that he’s passionate about computers. But, in reality, there’s a lot more to engineering than just that and the student might realize that he’s not interested in it and might want to change his career after getting into an engineering college.

That is why career counselling is of utmost importance. The right guidance at the right age can help shape students’ thinking and enable them to take the right decisions for themselves.

How career planning helps students

The counselling process is an extensive and detailed one led by a professional counsellor. Firstly, the student has to undergo an aptitude/ psychometric test. The results of the test indicate the personality of the student, his skills, behaviour, cognitive ability etc.

A career counselor will then explain the entire report and what it means to the student. The counselor will explain in detail the student’s strengths and weaknesses and where his aptitude lies. Depending upon the report, the counsellor will also guide the student on what might work the best for him, career wise. The counselor also suggests numerous career options that might work best in the student’s favor.

This is much needed as counsellors are extensively experienced in this field. Basically, counselors help students throughout their career paths. You can also opt for Online Career Counselling

Choosing a career is a huge responsibility for students, also one that might be too overwhelming for them at that age. And that is why it is important to seek help and guidance from professionals. Career guidance doesn’t just help students choose the right path but it also helps them get a much better clarity as far as career is concerned.
